Raciel Ocampo was a 2009 graduate of Sterling High School. During his career, he starred in both football and soccer, earning eight varsity letters.As a member of eight varsity teams throughout his career, Raciel set numerous individual records in soccer and football, as well as was a part of some of the greatest teams that have ever graced the fields of Roscoe Eades Stadium. He was a rare athlete, competing and excelling in two sports in the same season.Raciel was a four-year starter on the football team, kicking for some of the best teams in SHS history. During, his freshman season, he aided the Golden Warriors to a 9-0 record and #1 state ranking while making 21 points after a touchdown (PATs). During his sophomore year, he made 44 extra PATs and five field goals while being part of a team that reached the quarterfinals of the IHSA 5A playoffs for only the fourth time in school history. He continued his gridiron excellence his junior and senior seasons, kicking 28 PATs and three field goals and 36 extra points and seven field goals, respectively.Raciel received numerous accolades during his football career, such as being a two-time First Team All-NCIC selection, a Second Team All-NCIC and Quad City Times All-Western Illinois Honorable Mention selection his sophomore year, and a First Team Academic All-State and All-Western Illinois selection his senior year.Raciel also excelled on the soccer field, and is remembered as one of the greatest soccer players to ever don the blue and gold. He was a four-year starter on the soccer team as well, amassing a body of work unrivaled by any soccer player before him. He scored a combined 41 goals his freshman, sophomore, and junior seasons, earning First Team All-NCIC honors his junior year while leading the Golden Warriors to a then-record seven wins.Under the leadership of Raciel during his senior season, the boys’ soccer program reached new heights. By winning 21 games, the team crushed the old single-season wins record of seven, which was set the year before. Raciel himself had a season for the ages, scoring an amazing 60 goals, which currently ranks seventh on the IHSA all-time list of most goals scored in a single season by an individual. He was again a First Team All-NCIC selection and was also named the Sauk Valley News Boys’ Soccer Player of the Year.Following his senior season, Raciel was the 2009 Boys’ Roscoe Eades Award winner. He currently holds records in both soccer and football for most field goals made (15), most extra points (129), most goals scored in a season (60), and most goals scored in a career (101).Raciel decided to continue his soccer career by walking on at Bradley University. He played for three years as a defender and a goalkeeper during his freshman, sophomore, and senior year. He ultimately decided to focus on his degree in civil engineering during his junior year. He continued his involvement with the men’s soccer program as a manager.
