Jim Brown graduated from Sterling High School in 1940. While in high school he earned varsity athletic awards in three sports. He also excelled in the classroom and his scholastic achievements earned him the honor of class Salutatorian at graduation. He was awarded the Sterling High School Scholastic/Athletic Award, which recognized his combined scholastic achievements and athletic achievements.

Jim was awarded varsity athletic awards in football, basketball, and track and field. He was captain of the football team for two games, and was elected team captain for the basketball and track teams. His senior year he was recognized by the Daily Gazette sports department with the "Hecks" Award that was given for meritorious honors in football and basketball. Also, during his senior year he was co-holder of the Whiteside County Track Meet record of 15.6 seconds for the 120 yard high hurdles race.
One of the highlights of Jim's basketball career came in the Mendota game. He started the team scoring in the first quarter with four field goals, and later made two quick baskets to score the final four points of the game. Coach Curtis Brandau characterized players on the team as accurate shooters and a team that played with fine teamwork. Jim was a big part of that team.

After high school Jim attended Carleton College in Northfield, Minn. and graduated in 1943. While in college Jim earned athletic awards in football, basketball, and golf.

Upon receiving his degree in law, he practiced as an attorney from 1949 to 1985. As a special occupational honor he served as president and chairman of the prestigious Employers Association of Chicago, Ill.

Jim passed away on October 23, 2010.
