John Moore is a 1961 graduate of Sterling High School. He participated in basketball and is considered one of the best players in the history of Sterling High School. He was selected as a member of the NCIC All-Conference team, and in 1961, John was selected as the team’s MVP. He is still the third all-time leading scorer in Warrior basketball history with a total of 1,207 points. For many years he held the single game scoring record of 46 points until Kelly Preston tied his 46-point effort in 1990. John was chosen as Sterling’s first Roscoe Eades Award winner and was named to the All-State basketball 2nd team by the Champaign News-Gazette and by the Chicago American.

After graduation, John continued his career at Northern Illinois University. In 1964-65 he was chosen to the 1st team IIAC All-Conference team. In 1965, he was 2nd in the conference in scoring, with an average of 17.7 points per game and second in the conference in rebounding, with an average of 12.8 rebounds per game. That same year, he was chosen as MVP by his teammates. For many years, John taught machine trades at SHS and the Whiteside Area Vocational Center. He is co-owner of Moore Machine Works. His son Justin graduated from SHS in 1998.

During high school, over 25 colleges and universities recruited John, including five Big Ten schools. As a testament to his agility, “good hands,” and quickness for his size, he was asked to try out for the National Football League’s Dallas Cowboys during his senior year at NIU. Because he had never played football, he laughed it off and declined the offer.
