Ray Mangan, born October 1, 1947, was a member of the football team for one year, track team for two years, and wrestling team for all four years he attended STHS. Participating on the track team his junior and senior year, the team compiled 47 new meet records during his senior track season. Ray was a varsity wrestler for four years, and represented SHS in the IHSA State Meet all four years. As a freshman, he started wrestling at 103 pounds. During his senior wrestling season, he had an over-all record of five wins, six loses, and one tie. The Illinois High School Wrestling Tournament is always noted for it's tough competition. The 1962 tournament was no exception. Ray won second place in both the district and sectional Meet. During Ray's sophomore year he wrestled at 120 pounds. During this year, Ray won eleven matches and lost only one in a dual meet competition and won three matches and lost none in invitational tournament competitions. Ray was the NCIC Champion at 120 pounds, and once again wrestled in the IHSA State Meet. He ended in a tie for fifth place. Ray's junior year was the start of something big. That season he wrestled at 133 pounds. During the season he did not lose a single match in a dual meet or an invitational meet. He carried the school record through his senior year. Ray was champion of the Dubuque, Granite City, and Rockford Invitational Meets in addition to being the NCIC Champion. In the IHSA State Meet Ray won third place, losing only to the eventual champion. He did it again his senior year. While he wrestled at 138 pounds, Ray won all his matches in both dual and invitational meets. He was again champion of the Clinton, Granite City, Rockford, and NCIC Meets. He was champion of district and sectional meets, and then wrestled his way into the IHSA State Finals. In the last high school wrestling match Ray faced the 1964 state champion, the only individual who beat him his junior year. Although Ray lost, he gave a very fine showing and claimed second place to please Coach DeJarnatt. In four years, he had established a very fine record for himself, his coach, and school. Ray held overall record of 105 wins, 12 losses, and two ties for a .811 percentage. He wrestled in the IHSA State Tournament all four years by placing either first or second in the district and sectional meets. Ray has won fifth, third, and second places in the state meet. He has been the champion of six invitational tournaments, and he was NCIC Champion for three consecutive years. Out of 61 matches, Ray had 60 wins and only one tie. Upon graduation, Ray received an invitation from the U.S. Olympic Committee to attend Olympic Wrestling Training Camp in the summer of 1965. After attending the camp, he proceeded to enroll in Northern Illinois University where he wrestled. While he was there he went undefeated for one year, with a record of 6-0. He became a sergeant and detective at the Rock Falls Police Department in 1970. After 27 years of service, he retired from the Rock Falls Police Department in 1997.
