Frank M. Lee, born January 29, 1984, is an SHS graduate of the class of 1953. While, attending Sterling High School he received a total of 15 varsity letters: three in baseball, three in basketball, two and in football and four in track. A member of the baseball team, Frank was awarded with the SHS Hustle Award his junior year. His senior year, he served as the team captain and was honored with the Most Valuable Player Award. At the end of the season he held the SHS record for the highest batting average of .424 and was the teams' most outstanding fielder. The team ended their season with 17 consecutive wins and compiled a record of 20-2 for the season. While in basketball as a junior, Frank had a season total of 28 games, 49 field goals, 54 free throws, and 5.43 points per game for a total of 152 points. Captain of the team his senior year, he had a total of 23 games, 84 field goals, 80 free throws, and 10.78 points per game for a total of 248 points for the season. His career record is 55 games, 136 field goals, 136 free throws, and 7.42 points per games with a sum of 408 career points. In 1971, Frank received All-Conference honors and the SHS Hustle Award. The 1971 team also qualified for the IHSA State Tournament his final year of high school. Quarterback of the 1970 and 1971 football teams, Frank also served as captain of the team his senior year. In addition, he was the recipient of the Most Valuable Player Award and held a career record of four touchdowns, 104 passing attempts, 49 pass completion's, eight interceptions, 675 passing yards, five passing touchdowns, 67 rushes, 442 rushing yards, four rushing touchdowns, and a total of 24 points. In track, Frank participated in the 320-yard high hurdle shuttle, 480-yard low hurdle shuttle, and in the high jump event. The track team went undefeated in dual meets both his freshman and sophomore year, while having all but one loss his junior and senior year. After graduating in 1971, he attended Sauk Valley Community College, where he played baseball for one year and obtained All-Conference and All-State Honors. Frank then transferred to the University of Illinois, where he participated in basketball for one year on the freshman team. Frank finally transferred to the University of Wisconsin-Superior, where he played football for two years and was the captain of the team his senior year. In 1973, he was named Outstanding College Athlete of the Year for Division III Schools. Upon collegiate commencement in 1975, Frank acquired a coaching and teaching job at Winnebago High School. His basketball teams had a career record of 123-51. In 1993, he came back to Sterling High School, where he taught social studies and coached basketball, until 1997. His basketball teams at SHS held a career record of 197-160. After searching the Internet and through a placement service, Frank came across information on a coaching job in Boulder, Colo. After making a trip to Colorado shortly after discovering the opening, Frank was the new Fairview High School basketball coach. In 1982, Frank was inducted into the Illinois High School Association Basketball Hall of Fame.
