Jack Dombroski, born May 5, 1954, is a SHS graduate of the class of 1972. While attending Sterling High School, Jack earned a total of seven varsity letters, two in wrestling, two in football, and three in golf. Participating on the wrestling team, Jack won the Granite City Tournament his senior year. In football, Jack held the SHS record with a total offense of 1,008 yards rushing. He also obtained the Taualli Award and Most Valuable Player Award, during his senior year. In addition, he was named Chicago Daily News First Team, Champaign News Gazette First Team, All-State First Team, and All-Area Rockford State First Team. Captain of the team his senior year, he was also a member of the NCIC First Team for offense and defense. Jack also served as the captain of the Twin Cities football team during his senior year. In golf, Jack was named Most Valuable Player his senior year and served as captain of the team. Upon graduation from SHS in 1972, Jack attended the University of Illinois on a football scholarship. Serving in the defensive back position, he played a considerable amount his sophomore and junior year and started in the position his senior year. Jack received the George Huff Certificate of Award for proficiency in scholarship and athletics at the end of his collegiate football career. Receiving his bachelor's degree in 1977, Jack was employed by Stone Webster Engineering as a supervisor. He then was employed by the Department of Labor in Champaign, Ill., where he and his wife Donna relocated. They have two daughters, Jenna and Lizzy.
