Kent Carl, born September 25, 1958, is a SHS graduate of the Class of 1976. While attending Sterling High School, Kent participated in track, football, and baseball.As a member of the track team, Kent was an All-Conference, All-State Shot Putter. During his sophomore year, he placed third in the NCIC and the following year moved up to second place. In 1976, he threw a distance of 57'5" to qualify him for the State Meet. Kent also captured the school record of 56'02" and the Twin City Meet record. In addition, he set the Geneseo Meet record of 57'02" and Freeport Dual record of 59'2". He qualified for the State Meet again his senior year and placed first in the NCIC with a distance of 57'01.75". Kent served as the captain of the team his senior year and they went undefeated for the season. At the conclusion of his high school track career, he was named SHS's Most Valuable Player. In football, Kent was a member of the 1975 football team that placed second in the NCIC, with season record of 8-2-0. He was also the Taualli Memorial Award recipient and was named Most Valuable Player. In addition to this he was named All-State in Football. During his senior year, the football team had a record of 5-4-0. Upon graduation from SHS in 1976, Kent attended Sauk Valley Community College, where he was a member of the track team. While in track, he set the indoor school shot put record and indoor school javelin record. At the Indoor Junior College Track Meet, Kent placed fourth in the shot put and tenth at the Outdoor Junior College Track Meet.In 1978, Kent married his wife, Penny. They have two daughters.
