Doug McCoy, born March 23, 1961, is a SHS graduate of the class of 1979. During his high school athletic career, Doug earned a total of eight varsity letters: two in football, two in basketball, and four in track. Doug was named Most Valuable Player in football, basketball, and track his senior year, he also served as the captain of each team. He was named All-Conference First Team his senior year in football, in addition to All-Twin Cities First Team. At the conclusion of the football season, Doug received the Taualli Memorial Award. In track, he set the SHS record of 45'3 1/2" in the triple jump, which qualified him for the State Meet in 1978. The following year he qualified for the state meet with the 1600-meter relay team. In basketball, Doug was named to the All-Twin Cities First Team. At the end of his senior year, he was awarded the Roscoe Eades Award. Upon graduation from SHS in 1979, Doug continued his education and athletic career at Augustana College. While there, he was a four-year varsity letter winner in football and two-year varsity letter winner in track and field. Serving as the team captain of the 1983 football team, the team won the first Viking NCAA Division III National Championship. The team also won three straight College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Championships. Doug was selected to the All-Conference Team twice in 1981 and 1983 and named to the NCAA Division III All-American Team his senior year. During his junior year, Doug set the NCAA Division III Playoff record with a 92-yard interception return for a touchdown in a 14-0 semifinal victory. At the time of his collegiate commencement in 1983, he held two Augustana College records in football - most interceptions in a single season with eight in 1983 and in a career with twenty-one. A four-year starter on football team, he assisted the team in compiling a record of 38-5, winning three straight conference championships, and earning three straight NCAA Division III Playoff berths. Doug and his wife, Patty, have three children, Andrew, Christina, and Haley, who all remain active in athletics. He is employed by Tri-City Electric in Joliet, Ill., and has obtained his electrical contractor and EMT licenses. Aside from his career, he coaches football and basketball for his children's teams and enjoys golfing.
