Karna (Abram) Chier, born September 3, 1964, is an SHS graduate of the Class of 1983. While attending Sterling Township High School, Karna participated in basketball, volleyball, and tennis.A member of the basketball team, Karna was named First Team Rockford All-Area every year she attended SHS and was named Chicago Tribune First Team during her senior year. In addition, she was named the Champaign News Gazette All-State team and First Team AP and UPI All-Tournament team in 1983 and First Team Quad Cities in 1981, 82, and 83. She received the Wade Trophy Medals her junior and senior year for scoring 1,000 and 1,500 points during her high school basketball competition and obtained the Pam Garcia rebound award in 1981, 82, and 83. She holds seven school records in basketball with most points scored in a single season (676), most points in a varsity career (1,979), most consecutive field goals in one game (10), most free throws in one season (104), most rebound is a single season (334), most career rebounds (1,019), and most defensive rebounds (238). At the state level, the 1980 team finished eighth in the IHSA State Tournament and the 1983 team finished fourth. The 1983 team is also a member of the SHS Athletic Hall of Fame. While participating in the state tournament in 1983, she was the leading scorer with 68 points. For her high school varsity career she had 100 wins and 13 losses. Karna was also a starting member of the AAU Junior Olympic Girl's Basketball team in 1980, 81, and 82. The team won the State tournament each year and advanced to the national tournament. In 1981, they had their best finish with ninth place in the nation. In addition, Karna was a member of the 1983 National Sports Festival North Team and one of the nation's most noted prep players. She was "USA Today" Honorable Mention, Converse All-American nominee, Street and Smith Honorable Mention, and fourth team Parade All-American her senior year. Starting on the varsity volleyball team for three years, Karna set the school record in spiking and received All-Conference honors each year. She was also Most Valuable Player her junior and senior year, along with serving as the captain her senior year. In 1982, the team finished in the top sixteen at the state level. In softball, she was named to the All-Conference First Team in 1981, 82, and 83. She also received the Jolene Leseman Batting Average Award, with an average of .426. Karna was also the recipient of the Roscoe Eades Award at the conclusion of her senior year.Upon graduation in 1983, she attended Indiana University on a full basketball scholarship. While there, she was named Player of the Week four times, Great Lakes All-Region (1986), Fast Break All-American (1986), First Team All-Tournament in Oregon Tournament (1986), All-Big Ten First Team (1985, 86, and 87), All-Big Ten Academic First Team (1987), NCAA District IV All-American (1985), First Team Coca-Cola Classic (1987), First Team at Spuds MacKenzie Bud Light Tournament (1987), and Athlete of the Year for women at Indiana University her junior year. She was also the Altrusa Award Winner (1987), a candidate for the Jesse Owens Award of the Big Ten (1987), and was a Varsity Club Scholar Athlete in 1987. She also set Indiana University records of most points in a game (40), most points in a season (542), highest season scoring average (23.2), most field goals in a season (273), best free throw accuracy (1.000), most field goals made in one game (17), and second in steals in one game (7). She led Indiana in steals in 1987, scoring in 1985, 86, and 87, and assists in 1986 and 1987. Receiving collegiate commencement in 1988, she was employed by Beecham Products as a consumer sales representative.
