Mike Murray, born November 17, 1968, is a SHS graduate of the class of 1985. While at Sterling High School Mike earned three varsity letters in football and four in track. A motivated athlete at Sterling High School, Mike played in the defensive backfield as a sophomore on the 1983 undefeated regular season football team. Captain of the 1984 team, Mike was also named All-Conference for both his junior and senior year. The first sophomore pole-vaulter in SHS history to clear 15'0", Mike qualified for the IHSA State Meet and finished among the top six. During his junior year, he set a new school and Twin City Meet record of 15'09" in the pole-vault. Qualifying for the IHSA State Meet for a second time, Mike was faced with a bucket handle tear in his knee. With perseverance, Motrin, and a little ice, Mike walked away easily with the first place title at a height of 15'0". In addition, he was an Honorable Mention to the 1984 All-American Track Team and qualified for Junior Nationals and the Keebler Meet. The 1984 "Blue Crew" concluded their season undefeated in the conference and captured the first place crown at the NCIC Meet. All-Conference and MVP both junior and senior years, Mike also served as the captain of the team. During his senior year, he established a new school and state record of 16'01" in the pole-vault. Returning to the IHSA State Meet for the third consecutive year, Mike was faced with newcomer Dean Starky, from Maine East High School. Both clearing 15'9", they agreed to move the height to 16'01", Mike's standing state record. Following a strategy of first time every time, Mike cleared 16'01" on his first jump, which granted him the first place title over his opponent. In addition to his outstanding pole-vaulting performances, he was also placed second at the NCIC Meet in long jump and a member of the 400 and 800 sprint relay teams during these year, helping them to conference and sectional championships.Upon graduation, Mike was offered a full scholarship to Northwestern University. In the spring of 1987, he finished in third place in pole-vault at the Big Ten Championship. Receiving his collegiate commencement in 1989, Mike was offered a career opportunity in Oakland, California at Clarity Film Productions. While employed there, he served as the editor and producer. A post-production film company also employs Mike by the name of Fleet Street Productions. He and his wife, Olivia, live in San Francisco and have one daughter. His wife is employed by Illumina Productions.
