Andra Swanson Adams, born September 29, 1967, is a SHS graduate of the class of 1985. While attending Sterling High School, Andra received a total of eight varsity letters in tennis and softball and three varsity letters in basketball. A varsity softball member for three years, Andra received numerous awards each year. Her junior year she obtained the Jolene Leseman '79 Batting Average Award and was named to the All-Conference and NCIC All-Academic Teams. Captain of the softball team her senior year, she was once again named to the All-Conference and NCIC All-Academic Teams. Participating on the SHS basketball team, Andra was also a member of the Illinois Junior Olympics Basketball Team during her freshman and sophomore year. During her sophomore year, she was named to the All-Twin Cities Team. The following year, she was named to the All-Twin Cities Team again, in addition to being named the All-Twin Cities Team Honorary Captain. Andra was once again honored to be named to the IBCA All-Star Team and to the Dixon Christmas Tournament First Team her junior and senior year. The 1983 basketball team concluded their season finishing in fourth place at the IHSA State Competition. Serving as captain of the basketball team her senior year, she also received NCIC All-Academic Honors and the SHS Hustle Award. At the conclusion of her basketball career, Andra had 185 assists, 357 recoveries, a total of 449 points, and averaged 6.8 points per game. A member of the tennis team, Andra qualified for the state meet her freshman, sophomore, and junior year at SHS. As a freshman, Andra seized her first conference title in singles and the following year in doubles. Serving as the captain of the tennis team her junior year, Andra and her doubles partner Jackie Prescott '86 were ranked one of the top 16 doubles combination in the state. In addition, Andra was again awarded with the conference tTitle in doubles in 1984. The team concluded their season with a dual record meet of 8-3-1, capturing the NCIC crown for the fifth consecutive year in a row. Upon graduation, she attended Lora College in Dubuque, Iowa. While she attended there she earned four varsity letters in basketball and tennis, along with two varsity letters in softball. In addition to being captain of the basketball team her senior year, she was also named to the NCBT Academic All-American Team in 1988-89. Captain of the tennis team in 1987 and 1988, Andra was named to the Volvo Academic All-American each year and received the MVP in 1988. She was also the first ever conference champion in singles to graduate from Loras. Andra holds a total of 138 wins and a singles winning percentage of 90% (46-5). Her senior year, she was captain of the softball team and also received the GTE Academic All-American Award. Andra ended her athletic collegiate career as the first ever female to letter in three sports at Lora College. Receiving her collegiate commencement in 1990, she was employed by Clifton Central Community District, as a teacher and coach. Andra continues to remain active in athletics through her career and life.
