Devon Carbaugh, the daughter of Kerry and Laura Carbaugh, had a four year involvement in cross country, basketball, and track where she earned four varsity letters in each sport. The highlight of her high school cross country career was earning NCIC Reagan Division individual champion honors her senior year. Devon was a member of four NCIC championship teams, as well as a member of a state qualifying team in her sophomore season and captain her senior season. On the track, Devon was a member of the 4x800 team that captured the conference title in all 4 years at SHS. She was a member of the 4x800 team that set the school record. Devon was also an NCIC champion in the 800 meter run and earned 4 varsity letters in track. Devon earned all-conference honors all four years and was named the most valuable track athlete in her junior and senior seasons. If there was one sport in which Devon will be remembered most, basketball would top the list. Devon was a four-year starter on the basketball team and was a unanimous selection to the all-conference team for 3 consecutive seasons. Her senior season was highlighted with the first trip to the state tournament since 1983. During her career, Devon helped the Golden Warriors to 4 consecutive conference championships and a 41-2 conference record. She was a 3-time Illinois Basketball Coaches Association All-State selection and was named to the Associated Press All-State 2nd team her senior year. Like cross country and track, Devon was a captain and earned 4 varsity letters in basketball. She leaves with her name on the all-time SHS record list for the following: career points (second with 1,813); points in a season (second with 604); most free throws made in a game (12); most free throws made in a season (116); rebounds in a season (335); offensive rebounds in a season (142); career rebounds (2nd with 861); steals in a season (second with 74); career steals (219). Devon was a 3-time most valuable player in basketball. Devon's accomplishments were not limited to the athletic arena as she excelled in the classroom and earned NCIC First Team All-Academic Honors in track, basketball, and cross country, as well as being on the SHS High Honor Roll for four years. Although records in this area are difficult to Validate, Devon may be the first athlete in the history of Sterling High School to be a member of varsity NCIC championship teams in three sports for all four years of high school.
