Gabriella Sandoval ’15 is the daughter of Fernando ’79 and Melissa Sandoval. As a three-sport athlete and a winner of the “S” award, Gabriella earned 8 varsity letters: two in volleyball, three in basketball, and three in softball in her four years. For volleyball, Gabriella was a two-year varsity starter. She received Honorable Mention All-Conference honors her junior year and the Coaches Award her senior year. She also received NIB-12 All Academic honors for volleyball her junior and senior years. During her senior year she was a starter on a team that won the first volleyball sectional championship since 1981. While she was on the varsity team, Gabriella’s teams went 29-8 her junior year and 28-11 her senior year.While she was a solid and contributing athlete on the volleyball team, basketball is where her athletic prowess really showed. Gabriella was the point guard on the varsity team her sophomore, junior, and senior years. She was a natural leader on the team. Her excitement on the court served as a model the other players would follow, and her humor and charisma helped the team spirit stay high. In addition to being a strong leader for her teammates, Gabriella was a fierce competitor on the hardwood, averaging 9.2 points per game her junior year and 16.5 points her senior year. She was more than just a scorer as she finished with 59 rebounds her junior year and 97 rebounds her senior year. Her sophomore year she received NIB-12 All-Conference Honorable Mention, the Pat McKinzie Free Throw award, the Coaches Award, Most Improved, and Defensive Player of the Year. During her junior year, she also received NIB-12 All-Conference Honorable Mention, NIB-12 All Academic, Pat McKinzie free throw award, most 3-pointers made with 25, the Hustle Award, Honorable Mention All-Area, and Defensive Player of the Year. During her final year of basketball she was team captain, named 2nd Team All-Area, NIB-12 1st Team All-Conference, NIB-12 All Academic, named the team MVP, won Karna Abrams player of the year, and received the Pat McKinzie free throw award. She also made the most 3-pointers with 60.Gabriella also played on the varsity softball team her sophomore, junior, and senior years. Her junior year she was the defensive MVP, and received Honorable Mention All-Conference and NIB-12 All-Academic honors. She was captain her senior year and received Academic All-Conference honors. Gabriella’s team ended with a 28-5 record and a fourth place finish at state her sophomore year. The success continued the next year when the team went 31-9 and finished third in the state. She ended her high school softball career with a 26-9 record during her senior year and conference and regional championships.Gabriella was also named the November Scholar Athlete of the Month during her senior year. Outside of athletics, Gabriella was a participating member of Key Club and Service Learning. She enjoys reading and spending time with her family.
