Turner Morse ’17 is the son of Dustin and Stacey Morse. A three-sport athlete, Turner earned 11 varsity letters in football, swimming, and baseball, and received the “S” Award at the end of his senior year.On the gridiron, Turner was a three-year starter and receiver. With the arm of quarterback Sterling Thornton ’16 throwing to him, Turner made an impressive start to his varsity career as a sophomore and was one of the leading receivers for the 8-3 team. At the end of the season Turner was named All-Conference. Turner made a similarly impressive showing his junior year, scoring three receiving touchdowns, and was once more named All-Conference. As a senior and captain, and with brother Trey ’18 under center, Turner scored six receiving touchdowns, helping lead the way to an undefeated regular season capped off by a double overtime 43-42 win against DeKalb. The team eventually went to the state quarterfinal game before falling to Sycamore. At the end of the season Turner was named All-Conference for a final time for his receiving efforts, and was also named the Overall MVP for the team. Turner left Sterling football holding the career records for total receptions (86) and receiving yards (1,059) in the program’s long, illustrious history.Turner was a four-year varsity member of the swimming team. Turner was an adept relay swimmer and qualified for state in his relay his sophomore year. Turner was also a captain for the swimming team during his junior and senior seasons.On the baseball diamond, Turner was also a four-year varsity player. While the team had a difficult season his freshman year, Turner was named as All-Conference for his efforts on the diamond as a pitcher, and continued to lead the team through his pitching and hitting efforts his sophomore season. Turner also had a fine junior season where he made the All-Conference team. Turner’s senior, and best, season in baseball was also the team’s best, where it tied the program record for most wins (22) and won its first regional since 1988. Pitching-wise, Turner held a 5-2 record with a 1.86 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, and 52 strikeouts in 52 2/3 innings. At the bat, Turner had a .418 batting average, .565 on-base percentage (a single-season record), and led the team with 18 RBIs, 16 stolen bases, and nine doubles. At the end of the season, Turner was chosen as All-Conference and was Sauk Valley Media’s Baseball Player of the Year. Turner leaves the baseball program with the most pitching appearances in a career (39), and second-most innings pitched (190 1/3) and strikeouts (190). Turner is also the current baseball program leader in at-bats (357), games played (124), singles (78), and walks (65). Along with those statistics, he is second-place all-time in hits (109) and runs scored (92).Turner was also exemplary in the classroom, being named All-Academic All-Conference six times. Outside of SHS sports, Turner was involved in school with Young Doctors League as an officer, National Honor Society, Math Team, and Science Club. Turner has volunteered for Parkway Center, Sterling Youth Baseball/Softball, Feed the Children, and various activities at Self-Help. Turner enjoys playing golf, working out, reading military forums, and playing travel baseball in his spare time.Turner hopes to walk on to the Naval Academy baseball team in Annapolis, Md., to continue his athletic career at the collegiate level.
