The 2019 Female Roscoe Eades Award was presented to Gretchen Gould, the daughter of Brenda and Jeff Gould. While at S.H.S., Gretchen earned the “S” Award for playing volleyball, girls’ basketball, and softball all four years, earning ten varsity letters along the way. After her freshman year on the sophomore volleyball team, Gretchen moved up to varsity playing middle hitter in some of the most successful years in S.H.S. volleyball history. In her junior year, the team not only fought its way through the regional championship, but in the process, broke the school record for season wins with a record of 35-4. However, these accomplishments are nothing compared to Gretchen’s stunning senior season. Breaking their own record, the team ended with an astounding 41 wins, including regional, sectional, and super-sectional matches all leading up to the state championship. Gretchen and the team’s other captains then helped push their teammates through two close games, earning their victory at the IHSA State Championship at Illinois State University. After an incredible season, she was awarded Second Team All-Area along with an All-Conference Honorable Mention.At home on the courts, Gretchen spent her winters on the girls’ basketball team, playing varsity in the post position after her freshman year. At the end of her first year on the varsity team, Gretchen was awarded Most Improved, and she only kept improving in the years that followed. In her junior season, she earned an All-Conference Honorable Mention as well as the Erin Reynolds Coaches Attitude award. After two years with losing team records, the girls’ basketball team stepped it to another level in Gretchen’s senior season, going from a record of 12-20 the year in 2018 to a 2019 season as regional champions and undefeated conference champions with a 24-5 record. As one of its captains, Gretchen helped lead the team both in morale and on the court, earning Offensive Co-MVP, First Team All-Area, and All-Conference honors.In the spring, Gretchen moved out to the softball fields starting for the varsity team at first base her freshman year, helping them to secure their sectional championship and an impressive 34-6 record. From her sophomore season on, Gretchen moved to third base as a key part of the softball team’s conference and regional championship titles all four of her years. To recognize her hard work, she was awarded All-Conference honors her junior year and an All-Conference honorable mention her senior year. At the end of her senior season, Gretchen was given further honors including MVP, Most Valuable Offensive Player, Second Team All-State, and Sauk Valley Media Player of the Year. Throughout all of her successful sports, Gretchen still managed to keep her grades up earning academic All-Conference honors her junior and senior year in all three sports. When she’s not playing sports, Gretchen spends her time at Sacred Heart Church and working. She will continue her softball career at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois.
