“Breelyn is a competitor. She always challenged herself and others to get better and improve each day,” said coach Taylor Jackson Breelyn Borum is the co-recipient Female Roscoe Eades 2021 Award. Throughout her career, Breelyn played basketball and volleyball freshman through senior year. Breelyn competed and won volleyball state titles with her team in the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 seasons. Breelyn also won a girls basketball regional championship to make it to sectionals in the 2018-2019 season. Breelyn announced her future plans to attend Florida Gulf Coast University at the beginning of her senior year in 2020. Florida Gulf Coast University is a Division I school where she will continue her athletic journey in volleyball. Breelyn’s journey to Roscoe Eades winner all started when she was around four, when she joined the YMCA basketball leagues for fun. Next, Breelyn joined volleyball when she was eight. Starting these sports at a young age gave Breelyn the foundation she needed to be successful as she got older. As Breelyn entered high school, she had to balance being a two-sport athlete, keeping up her grades in school, and making time for friends--and Breelyn found a way to do it all. She recalls that there were times she had to “wake up early to go lift… or skip time hanging out with friends,” but this made it so that she was able to balance and excel at her academics and athletics. Twin sister and fellow teammate Brooklyn Borum speaks to Breelyn’s success in the sports she played throughout high school. Brooklyn recalls that while on the court, “Breelyn’s mentality has allowed her to excel as an athlete. She plays aggressively and goes all out for every point.” Brooklyn highlights that Breelyn does whatever is necessary to get a point and help her team. She is a team player and focuses on the goal ahead, “always giving her best to excel in these sports.” Breelyn says she looks up to her sisters’ passion for sport, and they “make me want to continue playing volleyball, because I see how much fun they have at college playing.” Now Breelyn will get to continue the legacy her sisters set as she starts to play volleyball at a D1 college. Breelyn’s close relationship with her family allowed her to improve her skills until she was able to attend a D1 school to play either basketball or volleyball. Breelyn highlights that her family did whatever it took to get her to the practices she needed to go to, the clubs she wanted to be a part of, and “everything I wanted to make me the best athlete.” When reflecting back on her last four years at S.H.S., one thing that stands out to Breelyn is “the culture and the togetherness” of the girls basketball team. An undeniable reason for Breelyn’s success is her close relationship with coach Taylor Jackson ’02, the girls’ basketball coach. Coach Jackson appreciated the fact that Breelyn “is a tremendously hard worker and extremely coachable. She makes everyone around her better as a teammate and as a player.” Breelyn’s ability to rely on Jackson for whatever Breelyn needed allowed her to grow as a student and an athlete throughout high school. Breelyn says that “Coach Jackson was always supportive in volleyball, basketball, and school.” Having a special connection with a coach in a sport can help an athlete stay passionate about the sport while on the court. With Breelyn’s four-year commitment to two sports, which she excelled at, Breelyn was an ideal candidate for the award in the eyes of the Sterling community. Breelyn’s efforts over the last four years have not gone unnoticed, and many people across the community have been rooting for her over the years. When Breelyn found out she won the Female Roscoe Eades 2021 Award, she felt honored, as she points out that “it’s a big award and all the athletes before me that have won it have all been great athletes.”
