2010-11 Girls Volleyball

The 2010 Sterling High School Girls’ Volleyball team is one of the most successful teams to take the court at Musgrove Fieldhouse. A combination of the girls’ ability, competitive drive, and coordination led the Golden Warriors to a victorious season. Coached by Alexis Rivera and assistant Amber Cox, the 2010 volleyball team finished with a 32-5 record, breaking the school record for most wins in a season.

Finishing the regular season with a record of 30-5, Sterling became 2010 Conference Champions. Before 2010, Sterling did not own this title since 1986 and they earned the NIB-12 West Championship ranking with a record of 9-1. Sterling ultimately tied with LaSalle-Peru, who also had a 9-1 record, for the conference championship.

Their winning streak continued as the volleyball team moved onto regional competition. The Golden Warriors defeated the Freeport Pretzels in the regional semifinal 25-19, 25-10. Then, they faced the Rochelle Hubs in regional final action. Sterling struggled in their second game but altogether rebounded to beat Rochelle 25-11, 22-25, 25-19. By winning the 2010 regional, the Golden Warriors became back-to-back regional titleholders, which had not been accomplished since 1981.

Unfortunately, the girls’ volleyball season ended in a match against Woodstock Marian. In the sectional semifinal in Belvidere, the Golden Warriors battled against the Hurricanes’ lead; they were within two points three separate times. The match ended 22-25 and 17-25 in the Hurricanes’ favor. The girls were upset with the conclusion of their season yet remained proud of their accomplishments and gained a newfound determination for the upcoming years.

At the end of the season, some of the team’s individuals were honored for their work. Morgan Martells ’11 was recognized as the NIB-12 West Most Valuable Player and All-Area Player with her total of 259 kills. Morgan Martells, Krista Loos ’13, and Jennifer Rahn became All-Conference team members. Rahn had 173 kills and 57 blocks, and Loos had 162 digs and 129 kills. Also, Alison Massey ’12 and Carly Willman ’11 were awarded with Honorable Mention All-Conference honors. Ultimately, the 2010 girls’ volleyball team serves as a model for talent, teamwork, and success.
