1990-91 Girls Track Relay Team

Best of all time. That might be the best and most exact way to describe this relay team. Composed of four eventual Division 1 track athletes in Christine Kent '93, Caroline Kent '93, Jenny Schwab '91 and Angie Kent '91, this team was simple the best in 1991.

Early on during the storied 1991 girls track season, this quartet proved to be the mile relay team to beat, placing first at the Illinois Prep Top Time Indoor State Meet.

Completing a perfect regular season record, this relay team became the talk of the state track meet. This became very evident, as the team was included in an article by Chicago Tribune sports writer Steve Hyman, titled " The Great Midwest Girls Track Meet." This track meet was a mock/made up track meet by Mr. Hymon to determine what surrounding seven states had the best high school girl track athletes. The tribune throughout the regular season had collected top girls track times from the seven competing states. Times and distances were ranked amongst the competing states in 15 events featured in a meet and points were awarded just as they would be in a real meet.

The Great Midwest Girls Track Meet was very close between Illinois and Ohio, with the outcome of the meet depending upon the results of the 1600 M Relay. Representing Team Illinois was no other than the 1600 M Relay Team from SHS. However, Mr. Hyman seemed to have his doubts about the team from Sterling having stated: "Sterling High runs for Illinois, with a team consisting of - Yipes! Sophomore twins, Christine and Caroline Kent. Two sophomores? With Illinois' pride on the line? This is no time for inexperience. A dropped baton could spell disaster."

By the completion of his article, the crystal ball Mr. Hyman was looking through while he was writing his article, had gone from cloudy to crystal clear, as he made the following prediction. "The paper is lifted, it's smudgy. But there it is in print: The Kent twins, Jenny Schwab, and the twin's senior sister Angie are tops in the state at 3:56.8." Illinois wins."
