Record-setting time of 8:02 at Peoria Woodruff Invitational Relays Meet
Nation's reported fastest time at the moment

The 1964 SHS two-mile relay team recorded one of the most noteworthy seasons in Golden Warrior history, achieving not only at the local and state levels, but also garnering national recognition.

Members of the relay were Al Norman '65, Carl Whitmer '66, Ken Harrington '64, and Dan Needy '64. Duwayne Dietz '48 was the head coach, and Don Wiggington served as relays coach.

The quartet earned its national recognition competing at the Peoria Woodruff Invitational in the spring of 1964. At this event, running on a cinder track, Norman record a half-mile split of 2:01.5, Whitmer a 2:02.8, Harrington a 1:59.1, and Needy a 1:56.5. Their combined time of 8:00.2 established a new SHS record, but was also the fastest two-mile relay time recorded in the nation that season.
