1945-46 Football

The Golden Warriors of the 1945-46 football came through a brillant season undefeated. In the first game of the season, the Warriors issued a warning to all future opponets by defeating Community 57-7. A strong Geneseo team was outscored in the second game by 26-0. After the overwhelming defeat of Rock Falls by a score of 52-0, the Warriors led the downstate teams in scoring honors. The outstanding game of the year was with a mighty DeKalb team and the score, 14-0 marked the Warriors as favorites for the conference title. A fifth victory was chalked up for Sterling when Hall Township was downed 26-0. The Dixon Dukes, SHS rivals of long standing, tried hard to mar the record but joined Sterling's other defeated opponents. The homecoming game with the Dukes gave the Warriors a victory 32-7. Mendota offered little resistance to the atomis Warriors who finished one of the most successful seasons in the history of SHS with a victory of 39-7. This victory gave Sterling the disputed conference title and placed the Warriors second in the state for scoring. Coach Bernie Mitchell's Golden Warriors finished the season with 283 points; their opponents 40 points.
