Coached by DuWayne Dietz

The 1965 boys track and field team, coached by DuWayne Dietz '48, proved to be one of the most dominant teams in SHS history. They posted a 5-0 dual and triangular meet record, averaging almost 45 points more than their opponents in each meet. The Golden Warriors also placed in the top five in all seven of their fairly large invitational meets.

Sterling captured the NCIC conference title for the second consecutive year. The Golden Warriors won the meet by 17 points, earning them their 24th NCIC title in 35 years of existence. Co-captain Al Noman '65 raced to first place and set a meet record in the 440-yard run. Ken Matthews '65 and Ron McClintock '65 were also individual winners in the high jump and broad jump respectively. Keith Pratt '67 leaped to second place in the broad jump and Greg Kontos '65 placed second in the discus.

At the 32-team District Meet in Rock Island, the Golden Warriors placed fourth with 20 and a half points. Norman was the only event winner for Sterling, as he ran the 440-yard dash in 49.5 seconds. His time not only tied the meet record, but qualified him for state as well.

Seven Golden Warriors accompanied Norman to the state meet. Co-captain McClintock advanced with a second place finish in the low hurdles and was a part of the 880-yard relay. McClintock joined Tom O'Malley '67, Orin Sheley '67, and Dave Henson '66 to place fourth at the district meet. The mile relay of Norman, Carl Witmer '66, Ray Mangan '65, and Gary Breed '66 also qualified with a third place finish. The Golden Warriors fell short of qualifying for the finals. The closest athlete was Norman, who missed the cut for finals by one tenth of a second.

During the 1965 season, Kontos set a school record with a discus toss of 154'7" and Norman topped the 440-yard dash school record with a time of 49.5 seconds. The quartet of Norman, McClintock, O'Malley, and Henson set records in the 440-yard relay (44.6) and the sprint medley relay (1:34.7).
