1979-80 Girls Basketball

While the 1979-1980 season was considered a rebuilding and regrouping year for the Golden Girls, the 1980 girls basketball team clinched conference, regional, sectional, and super sectional titles, and advanced to the Elite 8 at the Illinois High School Association State Tournament in Champaign, Ill.

The Warriors ended the regular season with a 24-game winning streak and a final record of 26-3. They also clinched the conference title outright, with a perfect record of 10-0. At the IHSA tournament, the Warriors were handed a quarterfinal loss by eventual third-place winner Joliet East (56-43), in which senior and Converse All-American Amy Eshleman '80 scored team 20 points and had 11 rebounds.

In 29 games played, the Warriors scored a total of 1,685 points, which averaged 58 points per game. They also averaged 36 rebounds per game, 13 on the offensive end and 23 on the defensive end.

All-NCIC First Team selections included Teresa Renner '81, Karna Abram '83, and unanimous selection Eshleman. The second team was led by Jo Swanson '82, and receiving NCIC honorable mention was Callie Lee '80. At the end-of-year banquet, the following Warriors received special awards: Renner, Hustle Award; Eshleman, MVP, Pam Garcia Rebound Award, and Jolene Leseman Recovery Award; Jo Swanson '82, Pat McKinzie Free Throw Award.

The team was coached by Sue Strong '68, Jim McKinzie and Phil Smith '67.

Team members include Karna Abram '83, Julie Dirks '80, Amy Edison '81, Amy Eshleman '80, Donna Greening '81, Crystal Hawkins '81, Callie Lee '80, Janice Long '81, Jamie Preston '80, Teresa Renner '81, Sabra Shaw '81, and Jo Swanson '82.
