1981-82 Girls Cross Country

Coached by Don Mekeel
Dual meet record was 6-1
Finished second at district and eleventh at state

The Sterling girls cross country team, under first year coach Don MeKeel, had a very successful year and proved to the state they were a power in a sport that is very demanding and takes a lot of dedication.

Led by two freshman; Lory Slusser '84 and Mendy Hussung '84, the girls compiled a very fine 6-1 record in duals and won most of the invitationals during the season. A highlight of the season was beating Rock Falls for the first team ever 27-28, thus breaking a streak of 24 consecutive dual wins by the Rockets.

The Warriors later went on to finish second at the district meet and qualify as a team for the IHSA State Meet, where they finished a respectable 11th place.

Coach MeKeel was very proud of his team, when asked to make a statement on the outstanding team, he said, "The girls have improved a lot over the last year. They had never won an invitational before and this year they won all four. All of the girls improved their time. They also never beat Rock Falls before, but this year they beat the team ten times." At the annual awards banquet Laura Vandersteen '83 and Deana Jacobs '83 received the Dedication Awards for their hard work. Jacobs also was awarded the Hustle Award and Slusser was nominated Most Valuable Runner.

The members of the team were Deana Jacobs '83, Monique Delgado '83, Maggie Saucedo '83, Mendy Hussung '84, Lory Slusser '84, Wendy Pope '82, Laura Vandersteen '83, Roneta Hussung '82, Teri Bensinger '82, and Cheri Eades '83.
