After Helen graduated from Northern Illinois State Teachers College she taught all eight grades at Jordan Center. She taught at Merrill School for five years, and after her marriage to William Ramsey in 1942, she taught the upper grades at Woodlawn. When her husband died of a heart attack in 1944, she was asked to teach fifth grade and serve as acting principal at Lincoln School. She did this for eight years. During this time she continued her education by attending summer school, earning both her B.A. and master’s degree. Although Helen qualified to be principal of the new Lincoln School building, at that time it was considered proper to have a man in that position. She stayed on in the classroom and later moved to the newly built Jefferson School and completed 40 years of teaching there. Many of her students kept in touch and, long after their time in her classroom, would take her a birthday cake to celebrate.Mrs. Ramsey has been a dedicated member of the First Baptist Church where she taught in the Sunday school, sang in the choir, and served as president of the women’s organization. In the summer of 2000 she chaired the 70th reunion of her high school class.
