Clayton attended the University of Wisconsin to further his education and returned to Sterling to establish the Schuneman Insurance Agency. He is well remembered for his service to the community.He presided as President of the Chamber of Commerce, President of the Wallace School Board, and President of the YMCA. He introduced Little League baseball to Sterling, served on the boards of Sterling High School, Rotary and Gyro Service Clubs.Mr. Schuneman was a founding member of Sauk Valley Community College and served on the board for seven years. The Chamber of Commerce awarded him the Paul Dillon Award for Outstanding Achievement. He was also a member of the building committee for Sauk Valley Community College, the First National Bank, and Wesley United Methodist Church.Clayton was a lay leader at Wesley Methodist Church where he taught the high school Sunday school class for thirty-five years.
