Robert William Bulmer attended Penn State University for a year in the Navy V-12 program and entered the Naval Academy in 1945. In addition to his studies, he served on Trident Magazine as advertising manager, was a Star midshipman, and earned the Extra-Curricular Award before he graduated in 1949.Ensign Bulmer then was assigned to the Juneau in the Korean Theatre. In 1951 he entered submarine school in New London, CT. His first submarine was the Spinax. From 1958-1960 he was assigned to the Triton as Operations Officer. He was the navigator during the Triton’s historic voyage. The officers and crew, using Magellan’s charts, were the first to circumnavigate the globe totally submerged. The Triton earned the Presidential Unit Citation for this mission. A recount of this voyage can be found in National Geographic Magazine, November 1960. Lt. Commander Bulmer then entered the nuclear submarine program. Capt. Bulmer’s last assignment was with the Pentagon. He was honored with sixteen campaign and service medals.Following retirement Robert worked for the Philadelphia Electric Co. where he was in charge of nuclear training. After a long illness, Robert Bulmer died on February 26, 2000.
