Mr. Wahl was an engineering graduate at the University of Illinois in 1916. During World War I he enlisted and served in the Rainbow Division of the U.S. Army in Europe. At war’s end he took his army discharge in France, so he could do graduate study in Electrical Engineering at the University of DePoctiers near Paris.He invented, patented, and produced the first practical, electric hair clipper. Mr. Wahl exercised his patent rights against competition, winning a substantial infringement judgment and royalty payments for continued use of his patent.He founded and built Wahl Clipper Corporation into the world’s largest manufacturer of electric hair clippers with about 150 employees at the time of his death in 1969.As an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church he purchased and donated the land for Newman Central Catholic High School. As an inventor he applied for over 100 patents during his lifetime.Mr. Wahl was president of the Central National Bank (Amcore), the only bank in northern Illinois to petition the Governor in person to stay open during the depression.
